A well-organized and well-written book on Mac-specific Xojo techniques, approaches, and pitfalls would go a long way toward jump starting my efforts. I’m already poking around in macoslib, dissecting various classes to glean what I can. I want to create top-notch apps that exploit native Cocoa functionality, which I realize will likely entail heavy use of declares and/or plugins as well as a good understanding of the Cocoa framework. I think I fall directly into the target demographic for your book! I’m a relative newcomer to Xojo, and I’m interested primarily in Mac app development (as well as iOS if/when that becomes an option). Then, get it on the iBookstore and Amazon (neither of which are hugely tricky to do) and sell it as a PDF/epub on your own site. I’d say go for it! Release a beta version of the book at a discount for early readers, so they can give you feedback. I know there are some decent docs now for Xojo but well-written third-party Xojo/RS texts are extremely thin on the ground. Forget about the money and have fun with it! My two cents. With that being said, there are many avenues to publish something, exciting actually. Sell an ad here and there within the book, like iAd. Sell it as a subscription and promise to update the content three times a year. Write an App that IS the tutorial/book/guide. Just look at Matt Neuburg’s “Definitive” REALbasic book and how quickly it became dated. In the context of computer programming, your number one obstacle is the time element and what you write as becoming obsolete and irrelevant in a short amount of time. Just look at Geoff and his new Xojo tactics. There is a new paradigm with younger people when it comes to selling them something. ![]() Your satisfaction should come from the process and getting what’s in your whacky head out there. Asking what people might pay is mostly useless, it’s far more complicated than that (read “Buyology” perhaps). My advice Sam, as a person who has been self employed as a retailer for over 25 years, non-computer related and who has written (many moons ago) a self published book, is to write it because you want to write it. ![]()
